Equipment

  • 6-Quart Slow Cooker

Ingredients

  • 8-10 medium apples Use McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Braeburn. Some Granny Smith for tartness.
  • 1 whole orange
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice
  • 1 cup sweetener Granulated sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, or a combination.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel the apples and discard the peel. Chop into large chunks or use an apple slicer.
  • Remove the peel from the orange leaving behind the white fibrous pith.

Cooking

  • Place the apple pieces, orange peel, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and whole allspice into the slow cooker.
  • Fill the slow cooker with enough water to reach the bottom of the top layer of apples.
  • Turn it on low and put the lid on. Brew on low for 8-12 hours, ideally 12 hours, or high for at least 4 hours.
  • Add the sweetener of your choice and stir to mix together and melt.
  • Using a potato masher, mash all of the apples in the slow cooker.
  • If a clearer cider is desired, strain the cider through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth.
  • Let cool slightly and taste. Add more sweetener if desired. For a concentrated flavor, boil off some water on high with the lid off.
  • Store leftover cider in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Notes

Do not use Red Delicious apples for the best flavor.
